Commission on the Status and Role of Women

Greetings from the Commission on the Status and Role of Women,

Grace and peace be with you! We were grateful to be in fellowship with you during Annual Conference this June. As you may recall, our committee dedicated our energies towards sharing the stories and witness of women. This was most visible through our big pink buttons that said #webelieveyou. We celebrate and hold in prayer the individuals who shared their stories through the Pre-Conference session “Hearing the Female Story,” our #Metoo box at the COSROW table, and in conversation with one another.

In an effort to continue to create space for conversation within the local church, we encourage you to engage with the #MeToo toolkit created by the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women, which can be found at: https://gcsrw.org/Portals/13/SIte%20Migration/GCSRW-%23METOO%20Toolkit-Online-7.pdf.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. As you review the materials in the #MeToo toolkit, we encourage you to incorporate some of the helpful worship planning resources into your October worship services.

Be on the lookout for more ways to connect with the Florida Annual Conference Committee on Status and Role of Women!

In Christ,

Rev. Madeline Luzinski

Chairperson,

On behalf of the FL Annual Conference COSROW

A Message from Bishop Carter:

Click here for a video of Bishop Ken Carter encouraging support of Florence survivors to share with your congregation and a bulletin insert to use in your church’s Sunday service.

Hurricane Florence was one of the worst storms to hit the Carolinas and caused catastrophic flooding. We remember well the overwhelming sense of destruction and hopelessness with Irma, and we also remember the outpouring of support, gifts and prayers received through our vibrant and resilient United Methodist connection.

To date, more than 7,000 flood buckets have been sent to the Carolinas from UMCOR and adjacent conferences. Because of that, flood buckets are not the current priority.

We know first-hand the importance of UMCOR’s financial support for Irma response and long-term recovery. When you make financial donations to UMCOR, you can be assured that every dollar will go to the program you specify. UMCOR can guarantee this because all their administrative costs are covered by the UMCOR Sunday offering and other undesignated gifts.

Please pray. Pray for God’s peace and guidance in the aftermath of Florence. Pray that people will see God in the midst of the destruction because the people called United Methodists were there. And, as the waters recede, our Disaster Recovery ministry will continue to provide updates on future needs.

As a conference on mission together seeking an adaptive response, we remain future-focused and passionate about people. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Carolinas and across the connection.
